General George Washington addresses the army in his “Farewell Address to the Army” on November 2, 1783, near Princeton, New Jersey, and refers to the Continental Army as “one patriotic band of brothers.”
On November 2, 1944, more than a thousand bombers from the 8th Air Force launched a huge attack on Merseburg, Germany’s synthetic fuel plants. At a cost of 40 bombers, the Americans down 183 enemy fighters, including four jets. By the conclusion of the war, the 8th Air Force had significantly hampered the manufacture of synthetic fuel required for Luftwaffe jets.
